Wait. Maybe you are finding it hard to face your flaws and past mistakes that’s caused mistrust in someone you love? I hear you. Just close your eyes, breathe slowly and be kind to yourself. It’s time for deep thinking and becoming a better version of yourself.
This post is all about identifying signs of trust, and how happy relationships are built on strong love and trust.
The Full Meaning of Trust
“Someone once told me that you could not have a relationship without trust, and they were absolutely right. At least not a healthy one, because trust is embedded in every fiber of a relationship.
To better understand trust, we need to reflect on the opposite—betrayal. Often betrayal is thought of as this huge event that shakes the partnership to its core. Betrayal can be obvious, loud, and big. It can also be subtle, discrete, and ongoing, eroding the relationship over time.
You experience betrayal when you discover information your partner kept from you. Or when they don’t show you the support you need when you need it most. The message you receive is that you cannot totally rely on them.” – The Deeper Meaning of Trust, The Gottman Institute
To me, realising how trust affects emotional safety was a huge eye opener. Lack of trust lead to lack of emotional safety in my first marriage. It’s something I learned after the marriage broke up.
For a couple to be able to share each other’s emotions without any fear, there has to be trust. Deep emotional connections are built this way (Emotional Intimacy).
Why Strong Trust in Relationships Is Essential
I agree that we could not have a healthy relationship without trust. For us to feel safe to be vulnerable and rely on each other, there has to be strong trust in relationships. This brings stability into a relationship. With stability, partners can navigate challenges easier, and there’s less chance of misunderstanding between them. This leads to a more resilient and fulfilling relationship.
Strong trust is a cornerstone of any long term relationship.
Signs of Trust
Whether you are still in an early stage of a relationship, in a long term relationship, or somewhere in between, check out the following signs of strong trust. You might be able to see how you can improve your relationship.
- Open and Honest Communication: Partners openly share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment or retaliation.
- Reliability: Each partner consistently follows through on promises and commitments.
- Emotional Safety: Both individuals feel secure expressing their emotions, knowing they will be met with empathy and support. They can be present and supportive to each other during highs and lows.
- Transparency: There are no secrets or hidden agendas. Partners are honest about their actions and intentions.
- Respect for Boundaries: Each respects the other’s personal space, decisions, and individuality without suspicion or control.
- Conflict Resolution: Disagreements are handled constructively, with trust that both parties aim for a fair resolution.
- Support During Difficult Times: Partners can support each other going through crises, knowing the bond will remain steadfast (Crisis Intimacy).
- Shared Decision-Making: Partners collaborate and value each other’s input.
Level of Trust Worksheet
My free 5-page Level of Trust worksheet is on the way. Watch this space! You’ll be able to download and use it to evaluate the level of trust in your relationship. The first section contains 18 questions, and you give answers by rating each question on a scale of 1 to 5. Based on the score, you’ll fill in the next section. This section will guide you to acknowledge the signs of strong trust and areas that need your attention. Last but not least, there’s also a section for you to write an action plan.
This worksheet is designed to help you and your partner evaluate the trust in your relationship. You can use it individually for reflection, but I encourage you to complete the worksheet together and deepen mutual understanding.
Celebrating the Signs of Trust
People tend to focus on lack. So, we could easily point out what we’re not doing to earn trust from each other. We feel bad about ourselves, or start to blame each other. This is the last thing we want to do.
We do need to address those things (carefully), but it’s also important for us to acknowledge and nurture strong trust in relationships that’s already there. By doing this, we can strengthen the bond further.
If building strong love and trust feels important in your current relationship, make time to connect with each other regularly and practice having open and honest conversation. Start small, maybe create a shared ritual where you prioritise spending time together. Here’s my post on how to build meaningful relationships through shared rituals, with examples of rituals that you can try.
