Are you a jealous person? Do you feel ashamed when you are jealous? That’s me, for most of my life, and it wasn’t nice to feel this way.

To overcome this feeling towards jealousy, the best thing we can do is to confront it. Jealousy is one of our negative emotions that naturally exist, but can easily become the cause of relationship break-up if it turns toxic.

Toxic jealousy is damaging because it involves control, manipulation and emotional distress. If you’ve ever wondered, “Am I too jealous?” or struggled with a partner’s excessive jealousy, this article will help you recognise the warning signs.

In this post, we’ll break down the natural emotion called jealousy, when it turns toxic, and how we may free ourselves from toxic jealousy.

Why Do We Get Jealous?

You may be struggling with jealousy of others, and looking for some kind of solutions to “how to not be jealous of others” or “how to deal with jealousy of others”. Jealousy is one of our natural emotions, so it may not be possible to eliminate completely. But, to handle it better, let’s first look at the reasons for jealousy in relationships.

We get jealous because it’s a natural response to feeling threatened or insecure in a relationship. Both external trigger and internal trigger can cause jealousy.

External Trigger

  • Social media comparisons – Seeing your partner interact with others online can create unnecessary suspicion.
  • Jealousy of another person – Feeling threatened by a specific person in your partner’s life including their ex.
  • Change in your partner’s behaviour that makes you feel insecure.
  • Feeling left out when your partner prioritises others over you.

Internal Trigger

Healthy Way to Manage Jealousy

Because jealousy is a natural emotion that anyone can feel, these triggers probably sound familiar to you.

Now, you may be wondering, “When is jealousy justified?”. Well, jealousy is always justified as long as it doesn’t turn into obsessive suspicion, control, or aggression. In fact, negative emotions, not limited to jealousy, can be an opportunity to strengthen your relationships.

It’s okay to feel jealous, and the key to handle the emotion is to talk to your partner about it;

✅openly
✅as soon as possible
✅considering your partner’s feelings
✅taking the time to choose your words that show you care about the relationship
✅without judgement
✅without blame

It’s not an easy task for some of us, but this is how jealousy can become an opportunity to strengthen your relationships. This is a healthy & ideal way to manage negative emotions.

Signs of A Toxic Person in a Relationship

So, when jealousy becomes dangerous? If jealousy is just a passing emotion, there’s usually no harm. But, when it leads to a pattern of behaviour that affects a couple’s trust and emotional well-being, it is toxic. Here are 7 clear signs of toxic jealousy.

7 Signs of Toxic Jealousy

1. Constant Accusations

Frequently questioning their partner’s loyalty without reason. They may be hypersensitive and reactive, suspecting the partner over minor things.

2. Emotional Manipulation

Using guilt or fear to control their partner’s actions. For example, saying something like, “If you loved me, you wouldn’t have done what you did.”

3. Snooping and Spying

Checking their partner’s belongings, phone, social media, or location without asking the partner.

4. Controlling Behaviour

Dictating who their partner can talk to, what to wear or where to go.

5. Excessive Insecurity and Clinginess

Demanding constant reassurance and getting upset if their partner spends time alone or with others.

6. Explosive Reactions

Frequently getting angry and having arguments with their partner for interacting with others.

7. Isolation from Friends and Family

Trying to cut their partner off from social circle to maintain control.

If you recognise these behaviours in yourself or your partner, it’s a sign that jealousy is poisoning your relationship.

How to Overcome Jealousy and Possessiveness

This section is for you if you are the person with toxic jealousy and wanting to change. Jealousy doesn’t have to control your life. There are ways to break free from toxic jealousy. And, congratulations! You have already taken the first step because you are aware of the damage you’ve caused in your partner and the relationship.

Actionable Steps

For You

Identify the triggers: Ask yourself, “What makes me feel jealous?” “Is it my partner’s actions or my own insecurities?”
Reframe your self-worth: What are your unique strengths? List them out. Stop comparing yourself to others.
Build confidence: You can build confidence by getting good at what you enjoy. It can be sport, art or learning something new. Set goals and make sure to celebrate your achievements.
Challenge negative thoughts: Thoughts are not facts. When her clients struggle with negative thoughts, April Eldemire, LMFT says, “I encourage my clients to ask themselves, “Is that so?” Is it really happening? If the answer is no, let go of the negative thoughts.”

For You and Your Partner

Have open conversations: Try to express feelings without blaming. This might be best to approach with a professional help such as couples therapy.
Establish boundaries: Communicate each other’s boundaries clearly and respect them.

Consider combining individual or couples therapy in this process. Many people find it extremely hard to go through deep-seated relationship issues on their own. Remember, seeking help is a brave act, not a sign of weakness.

How to Protect Yourself

This section is for you if you are a person who is suffering because of your partner’s toxic jealousy.

Warning Signs

Sometimes, for many reasons, toxic jealousy cannot be “fixed” and escalates into emotional or physical abuse. When jealousy becomes dangerous like this, you must protect yourself. Here are some warning signs;

  • Your partner’s jealousy leads to constant fights, stress and fear.
  • They try to isolate you from others, including your loved ones.
  • Your partner blames you for their jealousy and behaviour. They say something like, “I wouldn’t act this way if you didn’t make me feel jealous”, “This is your fault”.
  • You feel like you are constantly walking on eggshells.

Often, we don’t see how bad things are when we are in the middle of it (maybe it’s a natural way of protecting ourselves?). So, I urge you to take a step back and talk to someone who you can trust. Do any of these warning signs apply to your relationship? If you find any of them in your relationship, set boundaries and seriously consider if you need to stay in the relationship. In extreme cases, jealousy is poison and puts your safety at risk.
