7 Main Reasons Why Communication Fails
Have you ever thought about the exact reasons why communication fails between you and your partner?
The better we communicate with our long-term partner, the better the relationship becomes. There will be less stress and more fulfilment. This impacts all areas of our lives such as family, career and health.
No need to say about the impact it has on the level of overall quality of life.
Yet, after years together, many women in their 40s and 50s find themselves struggling to have good communication with their partners. It even looks impossible sometimes.
You see, I used to be one of them and wondered, “Why does communication fail all the time? What am I doing wrong?”
In this blog post, we’ll explore the reasons why communication fails.
And, here’s the best part;
Let’s find out actionable steps on how to communicate better relationships… one conversation at a time.
This post is all about the reasons why communication fails and actionable steps we can take to make it work.
Connection and Communication
Before we start talking about communication failure, I want to emphasise that, between people, a good connection must be there before communication.
Connect before communicate. Find out ways to connect Here.
However, effective communication is a crucial element to turn your relationship around.
How are You Communicating?
Is poor communication a red flag? Absolutely.
Let’s look at the differences between positive and negative communication. What kind of impact do they have on our long-term relationships?
Positive Communication
Clear, respectful, and empathetic. It involves active listening which makes both partners feel heard and understood.
Nonverbal cues such as eye contact, nodding, and open body language play a crucial role, too.
When communication is positive, trust & intimacy increase. It further deepens the connection between you and your partner.
Negative Communication
Criticism, defensiveness, and contempt are the characteristics of negative communication.
It often involves interrupting, dismissing the other person’s feelings, or using hurtful language.
Nonverbal cues play a crucial role here as well. Avoiding eye contact, crossed arms, rolling eyes, etc. weaken the connection.
Negative communication erodes trust, creates emotional distance, and it can lead to the breakup.
7 Reasons Why Communication Fails & How to Improve It
So, why does communication fail, even when you have the best intentions?
I’m going to list out seven main reasons why communication fails and how you can overcome these challenges.
Just remember, communication is a skill. It may take time to learn, but you can do it!
Reason 1. Lack of Active Listening
One of the most common reasons why communication fails is the lack of active listening.
You may think and look like you’re listening, but if you are preparing your response, you’re not fully present in what the other person is saying.
So, next time when your partner is speaking, ask yourself
“Am I mentally preparing my response?”
Active listening means focusing entirely on your partner’s words and their emotions. You don’t have to say words if it’s not necessary.
Often, you need fewer words or no words at all.
How to Improve
Practise Active Listening: Stay in the moment and give your partner your undivided attention. Be patient!
Ask Clarifying Questions: Ensure you fully understand what your partner is saying by asking for clarification if needed.
Reflect Back: Paraphrase what your partner has said to confirm your understanding.
Reason 2. Assumptions and Misinterpretations
Assumptions can be deadly in communication.
We can easily make the mistake –we assume we know what our partner is thinking or feeling without actually asking them.
How about misinterpretations?
Misinterpretations often come from our own insecurities or past experiences. It happens when we project them onto our partner’s words or actions.
How to Improve
Clarify Before Reacting: Don’t jump to conclusions. Instead, ask your partner to explain what they mean.
Use “I” Statements: You can avoid sounding accusatory by using “I” statements. Try to express your feelings and concerns this way. For example, say;
“I get anxious and feel unworthy when you don’t tell me you’re running late.”
instead of saying,
“You never tell me that you’re running late.”
Check Your Biases: Do you have any preconceived notions or biases that can influence how you interpret your partner’s words?
Reason 3. Unaware of Nonverbal Cues
Did you know that nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice often carry more weight than words?
The importance of nonverbal communication cannot be overstated in any relationship.
But not everyone pays attention to nonverbal cues in their everyday lives.
When you ignore or misread them, or simply aren’t aware of them, it can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
How to Improve
Be Attentive to Their Body Language: Observe your partner’s posture, facial expressions, and gestures. What are they like? How do they make you feel?
Work on Your Nonverbal Cues: Be aware of your own nonverbal cues. Are you projecting something negative through your body language or tone of voice? Practice using positive ones. Here’s how to read and use body language.
Talk About It: Talk about nonverbal cues with your partner. How are you both using them, and what effect do they have on each other?
Reason 4. Fear of Vulnerability
I personally relate to this one most.
Fear of vulnerability often comes from fear of rejection, judgment, being hurt, or all of them.
If we are afraid to share and hold back our true feelings and needs, disconnection happens between our partners and us.
When there is a disconnection, there is no genuine communication.
How to Improve
Create a Safe Space: You need to feel safe to be open & honest. So, find a safe space where you both can be comfortable to share thoughts and feelings.
Be Honest About Your Fears: Address the fear itself. Be honest and explain your fear of vulnerability to your partner. You never know, your partner may have the same fear.
Support Each Other: If you are able to create a safe space and start the conversation, you’ll soon find that sharing vulnerabilities strengthens your bond.
Reason 5. Different Communication Styles
Every person has a unique communication style.
Sometimes, communication fails simply because you and your partner have different ways of expressing yourselves.
For example, one partner is more direct, while the other prefers to hint or use subtle cues.
How to Improve
Understand Each Other’s Style: Analyse your partner’s communication style. How is it different from yours?
Adapt Your Approach: If you can, adjust your communication style to better align with your partner’s.
Be Patient: Communication is a skill that takes time to develop. Especially when working with a person with a different communication style, be patient.
Reason 6. Unresolved Past Conflicts
Are there any conflicts that haven’t been resolved between you and your partner?
Unresolved past conflicts can linger and resurface during new discussions. They poison current communication.
It’s one of the hardest conversations to have, but here’s what you can do to overcome this challenge.
How to Improve
Address the Past: Have an open discussion about any unresolved issues. Acknowledge past mistakes. Agree on ways to move forward.
Forgive and Let Go: Make a conscious decision to forgive and let go of past mistakes.
Focus on the Present: Once you address and let go of the past conflict, keep conversations grounded in the present moment. Do not bring up old wounds.
Reason 7. Stress and External Pressures
If we are too stressed about what’s going on around us —such as work, health, financial worries, or family issues— it can easily spill over into our relationships.
We’ve all been there, right?
This is often the reason why communication fails. Because when we are stressed, it’s easy to become short-tempered, distracted, or emotionally distant.
How to Improve
Practise Self-Care: Take some time out to deal with your mental and physical health. You’ll be able to better show up for your partner if you do it.
Your partner might feel that it’s their fault that you are stressed, so make sure to explain everything –what’s causing the stress, why you’re taking the time out, etc.
Prioritise Your Relationship: Set aside time for your relationship, even during stressful periods. Consider creating rituals, even something as simple as spending 10 minutes daily with undivided attention to each other. Learn more about couple’s rituals Here.
Manage Stress Together: Be vulnerable, share your stresses with your partner. You might be able to work together to find solutions. Even if you can’t find solutions, you’ll create a bond by being vulnerable.
