If you are facing the same challenges, know that it may take time to move forward, and that’s perfectly okay.
But, if you are ready to move on, or if you want to find out the best actions you can take when you are ready, this post is for you. I will share 3 essential tips to help you realign yourself, fostering self intimacy, realizing self worth, regaining confidence and welcoming new beginnings.
I recommend you grab a nice journal book and your favourite pen.
This post is all about the tips to help you realign yourself after breaking up with your long term partner.
3 Essential Tips to Realign Yourself After a Breakup
Tip 1: Deepen Self Intimacy to Reconnect with Yourself
Think of intimacy as a connection.
Self intimacy is about connecting with yourself by getting to know your body and mind. It looks like building a deeper relationship with yourself—acknowledging your feelings, understanding your desires, or things that bring pleasure to your body.
After a breakup, it’s crucial for us to spend time rediscovering who we are outside of the relationship. Some practical steps for deepening self intimacy and reconnecting yourself are;
Practical Steps for Deepening Self Intimacy:
Daily self-reflection: Look at your emotions and journal daily. For example, leave your journal and a pen on your bedside table, give yourself 10 – 15 minutes to write down what’s in your mind every morning when you wake up.
Mindful self-care: Mindfulness brings calmness. Doing mindful practices such as yoga, nature walks, art, music… means you are taking care of your physical and emotional well-being.
Exploring your sexuality: Masturbate. Masturbation, also called Solo sex is the safest sex and a healthy and normal act that no one should be ashamed of. Reclaim your body and pleasure. It’s one of the most powerful ways of pleasuring yourself. Connect with your body and learn to detach your sexuality/sex from your ex-partner.
Self intimacy helps you build trust in yourself again, which is essential for rebuilding your life from here.
Tip 2: Realizing Your Self Worth
Did you ever call your partner “a better half”? It does indicate your respect (or sarcasm?) and your “oneness” as a couple, doesn’t it? I don’t have a problem with the term, but I never used it.
When a long term relationship ends, it’s common to question your self worth because you have been part of a couple for so many years.
So, try to look at this time as an opportunity for realizing your self worth. Dig deep to find what truly matters, which you are going to realign your life around. Reflect on what value you bring to the world as an individual, not as your old role of “a better half” in the relationship. Here are the practical steps for realizing your self worth;
Practical Steps fro realizing your self worth:
Highlight your strengths: Write down your qualities, accomplishments, and unique traits to remind yourself of your intrinsic value. It’s also called Self-audit. As you do this exercise, keep offering compassion to yourself. Accept your flaws and mistakes and look at yourself with curiosity. Acceptance fosters safety, which invites honesty and self-exploration.
Set new priorities: What are your life goals? Have you ever thought about them? Maybe. Maybe not. Set your life goals. If you know them already, this might be an opportunity to review and re-evaluate them, focusing on what brings you true joy and fulfilment. It might help if you can reignite old passions, explore new interests, or even consider a new career. Remember that your life goals are for your fulfilment, not to impress or please others.
Create boundaries: Protect your emotional well-being by setting boundaries with your ex-partner, friends and family. But, most importantly, set boundaries with yourself to avoid falling into old patterns. Trent Shelton, former NFL wide receiver says, “Boundaries are not walls but bridges. They are meant to let the right things in rather than keep the wrong things out. By setting boundaries that align with our needs and values, we can create a space for peace, clarity, and fulfilment in our lives.”
Realizing your self worth gives you the confidence and prepares you to step into this new chapter with clarity and purpose.
Tip 3: Welcome New Beginnings and Realign Your Life
Don’t try to do everything that’s mentioned in this post. Also, there’s no right or wrong order to do these things. Life is full of “trial and error”. I know, it can be tiring, but that’s how we learn & grow.
When a breakup happens, it looks impossible to think of it as an opportunity. But, if we give it time, it becomes clear that breakups do offer the chance for rebuilding our life. For this reason, it’s important to go through this process with compassion, intention and purpose.
So, whenever you are ready, prepare yourself for taking some positive actions, be brave to fully embrace new beginnings and realign your life with your true desires. As you deepen self intimacy (Tip 1), become clear on your self worth (Tip 2), and start to feel strong again, here are some practical steps I recommend.
Practical steps for Welcoming New Beginnings:
Set personal goals: Travelling, a hobby or a personal growth program, whatever it is, now is the time to pursue what excites you. Just be careful not to overload yourself or turn these projects into distraction. Always remember to make time for self intimacy.
Surround yourself with positivity:
“Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” ― Dan Pena
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” ― Jim Rohn
Who do you surround yourself with? In your journal, write down the top 5 people. Are they contributing to your growth? For you to take positive actions and move to the right direction, seek out supportive friends and new social circles that align with your future goals. Clinging to past relationships doesn’t always serve you.
Try new experiences: This can be part of setting personal goals. When you feel strong enough after a breakup, allow yourself to look at the situation as the opportunity for a fresh start. Whether it’s learning a new skill or engaging in a passion project, new experiences will help you realign your life.
In your own time, I encourage you to embrace new beginnings. Allow yourself to grow, heal and evolve into a better & stronger version of yourself.
