3 Top Tips to Deepen Personal Intimacy
Personal intimacy means knowing and connecting with your own mind & body. This is where you can start to truly connect with your partner.
If you are in an unhappy relationship, you might be feeling a sense of emptiness, loneliness, or even numbness. There might be a lingering sadness or a persistent pain. This is where you’ve arrived, but not the place you wanted to be. And, you don’t know how to get out of it.
“Thich Nhat Hanh’s calligraphy “The Way Out Is In” highlights that the way out of any difficulty is to look deeply within, gain insights and then put them into practice.” – Plum Village
Not so long ago, when I dug down deep to reveal the roots of my unhappiness, I found a lack of personal intimacy – an intimate relationship with myself. Personal intimacy means knowing your own body & mind to truly connect with yourself, and by extension, to connect with other human beings such as your long term partner. Read on to find out what to expect during your personal intimacy journey.
This post is about 3 top tips for your personal intimacy journey.
Understanding the Importance of Personal Intimacy
It’s not your fault. It’s just the way you were raised.
Since we were born, many of us have never been taught the importance of exploring how our body uniquely responds to stress/stimulation, what brings us joy & pleasure, or what our boundaries are. On top of that, I was never taught how to effectively communicate my needs and boundaries with others. Well, my parents couldn’t teach me possibly because they were never taught either.
Intimacy Deep is a space where we can comfortably talk about our body, sex and sexual wellness along with other topics. I believe that our sexual wellness, an integral part of our existence, is often neglected in our daily conversations even though it’s a fundamental element of who we are. Lack of discussion and understanding in our sexuality creates a lot of intimacy problems.
Your body is a vessel of your experiences and emotions. It carries the weight of your stories, both spoken and unspoken.
Personal intimacy, also known as self intimacy, is the cornerstone of a fulfilling life. Materials you need to build personal intimacy are;
- Understanding your body & mind
- Recognising your needs & desires
- Ability to effectively communicate your needs & desires
When personal intimacy is lacking, the consequences can ripple through your relationships. You and your partner may experience some or all of these;
blame, guilt, sadness, emptiness, loneliness, pain, numbness, confusion, rejection and frustration
It’s a shared struggle that stems from an internal void.
Your life becomes shaky and unfulfilling.
How often do you take the time to truly understand what you need or desire?
How often do you tell these needs to yourself, let alone to others?
3 Top Tips to Deepen Personal Intimacy
Tip #1 Acknowledge and Overcome Psychological Roadblocks
Psychological roadblocks are often the biggest barriers to deepening personal intimacy. They try to stop you from allowing to let go, to feel pleasure or feel worthiness. They can stem from past traumas, societal expectations, or internalised shame.
First, identify and acknowledge them. What do you think your psychological roadblocks are?
Once you identify them, start working towards overcoming them. Remember, be kind to yourself. It’ll take time. Check out this post where I list 9 common psychological roadblocks for women, and explain ways to overcome them.
Therapy is definitely something you should consider, in fact, we all benefit from therapy, whether we have an obvious problem or not. A trained therapist can guide you through the process of uncovering and addressing your psychological roadblocks. They can offer tools and techniques to help you build a healthier relationship with yourself. So, seeking help is a courageous step toward self-improvement, not a sign of weakness.
Another effective strategy is to write down your thoughts and feelings in a journal. This practice allows you to externalise your internal struggles, making them more manageable. It also provides a space for reflection and growth. As you write, ask yourself: What do I need to feel more connected to myself? How can I nurture my body & mind?
Tip #2 Personal Intimacy Exercises
Here, we are going to get physical. Try personal intimacy exercises – Listen, Look & Touch – to connect with your body. Make sure you are comfortable, free from distractions and have privacy.
Listen
Start by listening to yourself. Make yourself comfortable, close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths. Ask yourself;
“What am I thinking?”
“What kind of feeling is coming up?”
Shift your focus consciously to your body. Ask yourself;
“What is my body trying to tell me?”
“Do I feel tension in certain areas?”
“Are there parts of my body that I neglect or criticise?”
These physical sensations are often manifestations of deeper emotional states. Your mind can tell you stories that’s not true, but your body never lies.
Look
Looking at our own bodies can be a challenge. We may be critical of them and avoid looking at it. But, how can you truly love yourself without accepting how your body looks?
So, from today, try to look at different parts of your body, including your genital area.
Why do I mention the genital area? Because this is the most sacred part of your body. Remember that it belongs to YOU. Not to your doctor, nurse, midwife or even your partner! Learn the anatomy, get to know your own genitals.
This is where your creative energy, sexuality and the life force come from. Your sexuality is a natural and beautiful part of you. Drop judgment and embrace it with kindness and curiosity.
Touch
Have you ever touched your body consciously and mindfully?
Touch your body from head to toe. Freestyle. No agenda. No judgement. Just be present in the moment, feel and acknowledge your body’s sensations. What sensations and emotions arise?
Engage your senses in a way that brings you joy and pleasure. This exercise also allows you to explore your sexuality in a safe and accepting manner.

Tip #3 Choosing a Quote for Inspiration
At the beginning of this journey, a few words of wisdom can be a powerful reminder of the importance & meaning of intimacy.
- Search for quotes related to self-compassion and self-acceptance and make your “Personal Intimacy Quotes” list.
- Choose a quote that resonates with you right now.
- Write it down in your journal, put it on a wall, or simply read it daily.
Here is a couple of suggestions:
“The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.” – Steve Maraboli
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” – Buddha
“Nurture my own body & soul, so I can show up fully for myself and others.” – May, Intimacy Deep
Different words, messages and affirmations speak to you at different times, so go back to the list as often as you like and choose one that resonates with you.
Personal intimacy is a journey. It’s a journey that’s rewarding and brings you true happiness. However, it does require you to have patience and dedication. So, have the list of quotes in your pocket. It’ll definitely help you navigate the journey.
Uncover Your True Self
What does it mean to be deepening personal intimacy?
It’s about peeling back the layers of societal expectations and internalised beliefs to uncover your true self.
It’s about embracing your strengths and acknowledging your vulnerabilities.
It’s about giving yourself permission to be imperfect and to grow.
You must also remember that this is not a destination, but it’s a continuous process.
So, there will be moments of clarity and moments of confusion. There will be times when you feel deeply connected to yourself and times when you feel distant.
It’s a part of the human experience, and these fluctuations are natural. Ask yourself:
“What can I do today to nurture my personal intimacy?”
“How can I show myself compassion and understanding?”
By consistently asking these questions, you create a habit of self-reflection and self-care.
Connecting with Yourself and Others
As you deepen your personal intimacy, you’ll find that your intimacy in relationships begins to shift.
This happens because when you understand and communicate your needs, you create space for authentic connections.
You become more attuned to other people’s needs and emotions, fostering a sense of mutual understanding and respect.
So, take a moment and reflect on your current relationships.
Can you see how your lack of personal intimacy affected them? What changes can you make to improve these relationships?
When you prioritise your personal intimacy, you also set the foundation for healthier, more fulfilling interactions with others.
